Garage Door Orientation

This unexpected movement in the garage door s path should cause the garage door to ascend.

Loosen the set screws with a wrench while holding the first winding bar you ll feel significant tension as the screws are removed. To determine the door swing while replacing an existing door step into the doorway with your back to the hinges standing sideways in the opening facing the jamb where the door latches. The reason your gear is not rotating both ways is your sensors are not completing their circuit. Most likely you ll just realign and be on your way.

If the open doorknob is on your right side it s a right hand door. Some builders have them swing inward to the garage instead of the home for safety reasons. Could be wiring or bad sensors if that doesn t fix it since your new gear was put in. If it s on your left side the door is left handed.

If there s a fire or explosion in the garage the outward swinging door blocks damage to the interior of the home more effectively than an inward swinging door. Check the alignment of your sensors. When the garage door touches the wood it should immediately reverse direction and begin to rise. Most of the time the end on the right hand wind is red and the left and wind is black as you can see on the graphic below.

Usually you will have two springs on your door which will be color coded.
